Maria Amanda is a single mother with two children. Seeing the necessity of learning a trade, she attended a beautician academy and then went to work in a salon with a friend. From what she earned, she saved enough to be able to buy some beautician’s equipment. With a loan from ADIM, she set up her own salon in her home and began to serve her clientele there. The workspace in her house was very small, so she was motivated to ask for a loan from ADIM in order to rent and furnish a space located on a central street in the Salesiano neighborhood. Now she has so many clients that she has hired an assistant and between the two of them they take care of the salon. Maria Amanda lives with her mother who helps look after her children. Her greatest dream is to prepare her children and to have her own home.

Important Information About This Loan
In mid 2008, a movement began in Nicaragua called “Movimiento No Pago” (a movement for non-payment of loans). This movement, supported mostly by farmers of the north of Nicaragua with ties to the left-wing party in Nicaragua, has been organizing protests and making it difficult for some branches of microfinance institutions to operate normally. This movement has been fed by the global the economic crisis, which has made it more difficult for Nicaraguans to pay back their loans. This group has submitted a law to the government to create a moratorium on debt repayment. If passed, the law could have a severe effect on the microfinance industry and banking sector in Nicaragua. Recent information indicates that the situation may be improving as the President of Nicaragua has spoken out against this law and would not support its passage in its current form. The network of microfinance institutions in Nicaragua (ASOMIF) has been negotiating with the government in support of an alternative proposal. Kiva, along with 25 other funders from 9 countries, has signed onto a letter to the Nicaraguan government urging a resolution to this situation without enacting a moratorium on debt repayment. The potential passage of the debt moratorium increases the risk of lending in Nicaragua. An Update on Maria Amanda's Loan

Entrepreneur: Maria Amanda Gaitan Pérez
Location: Masaya, Nicaragua

Maria Amanda used her Kiva credit to buy mirrors, hair dryers and other beauty products for her rapidly growing salon. Having recently moved to a new rental space outside of her home, Maria Amanda has great ambitions for its interior design.

Before obtaining her loan, she only had one mirror in her new salon. Now she has been able to replace that one mirror with two mirrors of higher quality in addition to several other products needed by a barber, from hair brushes to scissors to dryers. She has also improved the general ambiance of her shop.

Maria Amanda hopes to continue growing her base of clientele as well as buy more chairs, ultimately improving her clients' experience, as well as her personal satisfaction with her business. She is very grateful for her loans through ADIM and Kiva. Before, she had practically nothing, and now she has a growing business that funds her livelihood while allowing her to do something she loves.
