Soam Pum

Soam Pum, 52, is one of the vendors who sells many kinds of vegetables, fish, and grocery items in her village. She lives with three of her children in Prey Veng, Cambodia. She has been selling since 2007 to earn a living and is able to make around US$1 of profit each day. Before 2007, she worked with her husband growing rice but she changed to her business to help double the family income. Her husband, Chhet Bou, 55, still works on his rice field and normally he makes less than US$1 each day. He said planting rice is just to support the family members.

Normally, people in the village grow rice two times each year. In the dry season, they grow a kind of rice that bears during 3-4 months and in the rainy season, they grow another kind of rice that can bear during 6-7 months. But both seasons the farmers need enough water or the crop will be damaged. Rice plants are easily spoilt if there is too much or too little water.

Soam Pun is requesting a loan of US$625 to purchase a motorbike to transport her vegetables and grocery items to sell in the village.
