Mr. Akutor Kossi is a married man with four children. He and his family live in Agoe Demakpoe. He is a volunteer teacher in a middle school called Etoile Bleue. Four years ago, Akutor Kossi established gardens to produce vegetables: carrots, tomatoes etc... He also has a nursery bed alongside his vegetable garden.

Even though the project is business-oriented, he has decided to introduce the social component into it so that his students can learn techniques for making gardens and nursery beds and hopefully use this knowledge to establish their own businesses when they grow up. The students will learn how to establish, maintain and produce vegetables, as well as develop and grow seedlings .

As a volunteer teacher, and although he is not paid well at his school, he and his family have been able to survive on the products from these two projects. As his business is flourishing he would like to enlarge it. Not having financial resources himself, he is requesting a loan of $750 for the garden and nursery projects. Based on his experience in the business, Akutor thinks that he will be able to pay back his loan within 18 months.

Thank you for assisting him to improve his business so that he can also help his little students.

Update on Kiva's Partnership with HELP Africa

Entrepreneur: Kossi Akutor
Location: Agoe, Togo

As you may already know, HELP Africa has been facing serious organizational challenges that have limited its ability to post and manage loans on Kiva. In January, a mutual agreement was reached to pause their fundraising activities on our website, though the institution was expected to continue collecting and sending borrower repayments on existing loans. The difficulties, however, proved to be more significant than initially believed, and HELP Africa has had to close its doors and cease operations in Togo. The institution recently constituted a new Board of Directors that is working on developing a new international strategy for the group, but at this point, it is unclear what the outcome for Togo will be.

Since HELP Africa has been delinquent on payments for more than six months, all of their active loans will be defaulted, per Kiva’s default policy. Kiva will continue to work on collecting loan repayments, and we will keep you posted on any new developments. Any amounts eventually recovered by Kiva will be applied to Help Africa Lenders proportionally.

For status updates and more information, please refer to HELP Africa’s partner page at http://www.kiva.org/about/aboutPartner?id=45.
