Leonora's Kiva loan

Entrepreneur: Leonora Vicente
Location: Location Undisclosed, Peru

Leonora used her Kiva loan of 2000 soles to buy rice, flour, sugar, and dried beans, corn and pasta for her stand in Ayacucho’s April 12th Market. Sales are more or less the same, she says, and vary from day to day and week to week.

Leonora has been a member of the Amaqella Village Bank for nine years. She says that FINCA has changed her life. It has allowed her to work hard and expand her business. She also has precious memories of having Lucinda “Morenita” Flores de Lanao, FINCA’s founder, as her loan officer years ago. Morenita passed away several years ago, but Leonora still treasures the lessons she learned from her.

Leonora’s goal for the future is to open a store of her own, or to launch another business that will allow her to earn more.

Leonora is pictured below (left) with Lorenza and Ingrid, two fellow members of the Amaqella Village Bank. The women have known one another for six or more years now, and have a warm, friendly relationship. Lorenza and Leonora good-naturedly tease Ingrid throughout our interview, and everyone laughs together.

Clarification: Leonora’s original Kiva profile stated that “Leonora has a home on an avenue which she rents and sues the income for her children’s education.” It should have read, “Leonora has a home on an avenue, which she rents out. She uses the income for her children’s education.”
