Update on your loan recipient, Ysabel Mendoza from Pucallpa, Peru

Entrepreneur: Ysabel Mendoza Bautista
Location: Callería - Ucayali, Peru

Earlier this week I visited Ysabel at her stand in the incredibly busy, chaotic market called Bellavista located near the center of the city of Pucallpa. Ysabel sells chickens. She works every day of the week, arriving at 2:00 am to purchase the chickens live from trucks that come in from the countryside. After spending a few hours slaughtering and cleaning the birds, Ysabel begins selling before dawn. She finishes up sometime in the late morning, whenever she manages to sell out. Ysabel has been doing this work for the past nine years.

The price of Ysabel’s chickens depends on their size. Usually she is able to earn around 70 soles (about $23) per day. If she still has a lot of chickens left and it is getting close to noon, Ysabel lowers her prices so she can sell out. She tends to sell more on the weekends, earning more than 70 soles on those days. Ysabel pays one sol (about 33 cents) per day for her market post. This money goes to the Bellavista vendors' association to pay for upkeep and security at the market.

Ysabel has been working with Kiva partner Manuela Ramos for the past seven years. She started working with the organization because she needed loans to be able to work. Ysabel feels that her credit has helped her. She is currently paying back a small loan of 500 soles (about $165) which she used to purchase chickens as well as a few items that she needed for the house.

Ysabel is currently single and has no children. Her goal is to have her own little business raising chickens which she can then sell to the market vendors. In this way she would not have to sell them herself.

In this short video clip Ysabel talks about working in order to get ahead. To her this means being able to study and have her own business. At the end of the clip Ysabel's stand is visible to the left.
