The Las Tres Estrellas ("The Three Stars") group is made up of thirteen women who live in the Villa Ingenio neighborhood of El Alto, Bolivia. The group is currently in its second loan cycle. The group members are involved in a variety of businesses: selling prepared meals, bags, toast, meat, and laundry detergent, doing upholstery, running an Internet café and neighborhood stores, and working for a local mining company. The group has a wide range of experience: some, like Constancia, Sabina, and Gladys have just one year of experience, while others, like Bertha, Cecilia, and Janethe have more than fifteen. Segundina has been working in butcher shops for almost fifty years!

Juana is the group's president. She has two children, and works from home in her upholstery shop along with her husband, Teofilo. The treasurer, Rosalia, has two children and runs an Internet café with phone services. Janethe sells laundry detergent in the 16 de Julio zone (the largest market in Bolivia). She has two children, and her husband, Octavio, works as a driver. The couple works hard to get ahead.

Most of the group members plan to use their Kiva loan to purchase more bulk merchandise to sell.

The group has a good dynamic. The women have worked together before with other microfinance institutions, so they all know one another very well. In their first cycle, the women repaid all of their installments without any problems, and were always responsible and punctual.

An Update from Bolivia

Entrepreneur: Las Tres Estrellas Group
Location: Location Undisclosed, Bolivia

Las Tres Estrellas took out their fourth loan today, so it was an opportune time to reflect on the impact of their prior loan with AgroCapital. All of the women agreed that their businesses had grown in a significant way. One woman shared that her sewing business had grown substantially since she was able to buy more cloth to make tablecloths.

Rosalia, an energetic and enterprising woman who runs an Internet cafe with phone services, was eager to talk about her business. With the past loan, she was able to buy another computer, which has increased the number of clients that come to her store. With the new loan, she plans to expand her business even more and open a second store in a different part of El Alto, Bolivia. She has reinvested the extra income from her business into growing her business even more.

Juana makes upholstery with a machine that she was able to buy with a prior loan. In addition, she used part of her loan to pay for the exportation of living room furniture to different cities in Bolivia. She is happy with the way her business has been growing and hopes to buy another machine with her new loan.

The women were joking and laughing with each other the whole time, but were serious and responsible when it came to their loans. They are all looking forward to growing their businesses more in the future.
