Anna Lum is one of two wives with seven children. Thoughts of the bad treatment she got from her maid, moments she and her kids felt sick and could not go to hospital for services, and internal guilt at not being able to pay for her children’s tuition is her motivation for going into business. Her immediate goal is to provide education for her children, while her long-term goal is to build a house where she can live in peace with her children.

With the help of past loans she succeeded in selling foodstuffs to her community. She is proud of having used the profit from her empowerment-credit activities to pay for two of her children’s school fees.

With a loan of $1000, she plans to increase her stock by buying cassava, yam, ibo coco-yam, and pepper in large quantities and retailing to other women who don’t have capital. She is convinced that her business will succeed because of the high demand from the population of the Bamenda urban center, her determination, empowerment skills acquired, and the peer support she is getting from her group members in GHAPE.

She plans to pay the loan off in 18 months. The first installment repayment will be made in the fourth month from the date of disbursement of the loan.

They are trading in cigarette, second-hand dresses, cocoyam, sweet potatoes and also bought seedlings. She started her business on good footing. Members advised her to keep close contact with the children and also ask them for financial report every week. The whole family is happy and the children off crimes because they are busy. She upholds her initial engagement to start repaying loan in July 2007.
