Communal Bank: Luz y Esperanza

Location: Tarapoto, San Martin Region – Peru

Loan amount: 800 soles

“Yo no paro” (I don't stop) says Neni when she tells me of all her business ventures. With the loan of 800 soles, Neni bought ingredients and a sausage cart to make “salchipapas,” a popular dish consisting of French fries and hot dogs. She bought the cart anticipating high sales during the regional San Juan festivities, where everyone goes out to eat and dance. Her prediction was correct and her sales were excellent. She was making daily profits of 120-150 soles per day. Sales started to decline after the festivities were over, and although Neni had been expecting that to happen, she didn't expect sales to be so low. After seeing that her daily costs were around 50 soles and on any given day she would only sell 10 soles worth of food, Neni decided to sell the food cart. With the money she got form this sale she bought a small freezer so she could sell “chupetes” (similar to a popsicle) and jell-o treats. She has been doing much better with this business even though the price of sugar has increased lately. Neni also makes “picarones,” a snack made of zuchini, in the afternoons and she also sells beauty products to neighbors and acquaintances. On top of all that, Neni plans on selling ceviche again. She had been doing that all along but due to some family problems, she had to stop momentarily.

Neni is not afraid of new challenges. When she saw that she could benefit from taking out small loans, she assembled a group of her neighbors to start a new community bank. Little by little she brought new members and her community bank is going strong. She remains as president of the bank and she is very proud of that. To meet Neni, listen to her business plans, goals and thoughts see the video below:
