Mary is the leader of this five-member group. She is a 50-year-old widow with four children aged between 26 and 16 years. Three of her children go to school and the eldest is working. She owns and resides in a three-roomed house, living with five people. There is no electricity, but it has piped water. Mary has another four rooms for renting. Mary's family gets three meals a day. She resides and works in a semi-urban area which is in the outskirts of Kampala.

Mary goes to Kampala for shopping three times a week. Her greatest monthly expenses include school fees. She has a retail shop and sells to all categories of people on retail basis. She rents her business premises for 40,000 Ugandan shillings (about $US24) per month.

Mary sells to an average of 10 people per day, not counting the numerous children's requests for sweets and related edibles. She buys her products from Kikuubo one of the busiest places in Kampala City and uses public transport back to her business.

Mary has been in this business for over twenty-six years. Her main challenges include competition and limited capital, but she is well known by the residents, which is her added advantage. She has been working with MCDT since 2002 and servicing her twelfth loan. She wants to use this loan to invest more in beans, flour, sugar and soap. She is aspiring to construct more rental rooms and buy a deep freezer for perishable goods, and wire electricity in her houses.

Mary will share this loan with the other members of her group.
