The Sagrado Corazon (Holy Heart) communal bank is made up of ten women and three men. Most of the group members have families of five (two parents and three children). Most are middle class, though some are from rural areas and have limited resources. Some of the group members own their own adobe homes, while others rent.

The group is involved in various economic activities: Elizabeth sells cleaning supplies; Julia and Julia Benita each work at and own a general store; Antonia and Lourdes sell bedcovers and bed pads; Juana sells sweets and drinks; Catalina sells dairy products like milk and cheese; Santa Nery sells fruit; Lidia works at a local cell-phone company store; Duglas is a mechanic; Marco Antonio is a reporter; and Edson does upholstery. The group members have different levels of experience in their businesses--some have been in business for just one year, while others, like Panfila, Santa Nery and Catalina, have been in business for 20 years.

Most of the group members will use their loans to purchase more merchandise to sell. There is a fair amount of competition in all of these areas, but the group members manage to stay competitive by offering a wide variety of merchandise and introducing new products. Most of them have experience with previous loans, both with the Sagrado Corazon group and with other groups at similar microfinance institutions in Bolivia.

Update on your loan to Sagrado Corazon in Bolivia

Entrepreneur: Sagrado Corazon Group
Location: La Paz, Bolivia

Sagrado Corazon was a kind group that shook me warmly by the hand when I entered and was happy to hear about the Kiva lenders that were funding their loan.

Catalina has been selling beef, llama meat, sheep meat, and cheese to stands and stores in La Paz for fifteen years. She travels to her village, which is three hours away from La Paz, once or twice a week to pick up the meat, and travels store to store in La Paz selling her wares. With her loan, Catalina was able to buy more beef, which is thirty times more expensive than sheep meat, and make a much higher profit. With the increased income, her family was able to buy more food and a few things for her home. When asked what her goals for the future were, Catalina replied, “To keep working as long as I am able to.”

Juana has been selling candies, cookies, and soft drinks at a stand for fifteen years. After using her loan to buy more snacks to sell, her business has grown a bit. In addition, Juana works at a cell phone store in the mornings. She has two sons who are twelve and eight years old, and it has become easier to pay for their needs. In addition, the family has been able to use the profits to take a few trips to a neighboring town named Mallasa. In the future, Juana would love to take out an individual loan with AgroCapital so that she does not need to rely on others in the group, and then to open up her own store.

Nery sells fruits, toast, and other food items at the stand that she opened up twenty-five years ago. She is grateful for her loan that allowed her to buy more products for her stands. She was attracted to AgroCapital by its relatively low interest rates (thirty percent, which is much lower than what one would find elsewhere) and its forced savings program which gets rid of her temptation to spend all of her earnings.

Virginia sells groceries in a small store, used her loan to buy a greater variety of products for her store, which has grown her business and brought in her greater profits.

Virginia has invested most of her profits back into her store to grow it further. She has one daughter who is ten years old, and occasionally helps her out. Virginia’s dream is to someday open up another store in another part of town that sells prepared meals.

If this entrepreneur interested you, consider lending to more AgroCapital clients here.
