Irene started her own business after her divorce because the family income diminished, so she needed to find a way to cover the household expenses and raise her 3 children. She started out in 1997 working at a relative’s restaurant. In 2000, she decided to set up her own stand to sell gorditas (small, thick, corn flour tortillas), and her daughters started to help her prepare the stews and serve the customers in their spare time.

She needs a loan of $600.00 USD, which she will repay in 6 months, in order to remodel the business space with paint and furniture.

Gorditas en Zacatecas

Entrepreneur: Irene Chavez Delgado
Location: Zacatecas, Mexico

For the last four years Irene has been making gorditas on a busy street corner in Guadalupe, Zacatecas. She has taken somewhere between six and eight loans with ADMIC, the local Kiva partner. Two of the loans were used with Kiva funds.

Gorditas are more popular than the taco in the state of Zacatecas. Gorditas are made with a thicker version of a tortilla. It is opened and stuffed with the typical fillings- meat, beans, cheese, or chicken. On Saturdays she makes tacos and hamburgers.

Irene started her business renting a store front from a neighbor. The original loan pictures show her inside the restaurant space. She decided that her income wasn't sufficient to justify the rent to she built a "tabarete", a wooden stand with a tin roof on the corner next door.

She uses her loans to keep her with the supplies she needs for her business, particularly in the difficult winter months. November and December have a business slow down due to the numerous family parties that take customers away from her. January and February are difficult business months everywhere as people focus on repaying debt accumulated during the Christmas holidays.

The "crisis" comes up as a concern for Irene for the next few months. But she is ready for "lo que venga" or what the year brings.
