Communal Bank: Los Chankas

Location: Lamas, San Martin Region-Peru

Loan amount: 800 soles

Carmela has a food stand in the Lamas central market. She serves breakfast and other light foods up until noon, which is when the market closes. In addition to that, Carmela also sews different types of clothing such as blouses, skirts and pants. Carmela invested most of the 800 soles in buying sugar, rice, plates, cups and other supplies that she needs for her daily food sales. With another part of the loan, she bought fabric for sewing. She is happy to report that although sales were a bit slow in the school vacation months (January and February), sales are picking up again.

Carmela was one of the founders of her communal bank. She is very thankful for the doors that microcredit has opened, especially for her children. With the income from her businesses, Carmela has been able to support her son to become a teacher. She is very proud of him because a few days ago, he passed the tests necessary to become a certified teacher and was immediately hired to be a computer science instructor.

In the near future, Carmela wants to keep her business growing and one day have a bigger restaurant. She also wants to support her daughter to become a professional.
