Ines Calcaño is determined to make a better a world for herself and her family. She lives in a town in Samaná where she can see the beautiful beaches, and she sees as many tourists as she pleases in the Dominican Republic.

Like any Dominican, her favorite foods are rice, chicken, and beans. She has three young adult children aged 20, 25, and 33. When they were little, she worked hard to bring up those future fighters of life. Now is time to fight for her own financial ease.

With the help of her small business, she is able to accomplish those desires. She sells hair products to small beauty salons near by: shampoo, conditioner, hair color, and others. Tourists love getting traditional hair styles, and there are also other women living in the same town who come to those beauty salons. Products that are put on their hair are the very products that Ines sells with such love and joy. Today the business has been growing; with the help of her group "Trabajando para el futuro," in time it could be fulfilling. Stories like hers are an example of what is done thanks to you lenders.

Ines and her story are typical of the "Trabajando Para el Futuro" Bank of Hope; she belongs to a group of 20 men and women who work hard to improve their lives with the help of their small loans. Each of these men and women has taken out a similar loan to that of Ines's, and on behalf of all of them, and our team here at Esperanza, thank you for your support!

Journal Entry "Trabajando Para El Futuro"

Entrepreneur: Trabajando Para El Futuro Group
Location: Samana, Dominican Republic

Ines is in her fourth year with Esperanza and has established herself as a very reliable member, because she is present at all meetings and always pays back the loans on time. She uses her loans to buy beauty products such as: shampoos, conditioner, creams, and makeup. Her niece owns a beauty shop where they partner together to sell her products. She has been satisfied with the steady flow of increased income, but still she yearns for more.

Her niece also yearns to become free from relying on her aunt for beauty products. Ines told me she believes that in the near future her niece will become independent and will no longer need the services of Ines. Ines has accepted this and has begun the process of developing a new successful business. She is unsure what the final product will be, but she definitely wants to return for Esperanza for another loan.

News from your loan to Trabajando para el futuro Group / Noticias de su préstamo al grupo Trabajando para el futuro

Entrepreneur: Trabajando Para El Futuro Group
Location: Samana, Dominican Republic

After finishing this loan, the group was somewhat modified (some members left and others entered) and the group took back a loan

Teresa is a member of the group and has been working as a hairdresser for 15 years. She first heard about Esperanza through a local association called Women in Action.

With the money they lent you could buy an armchair and hairdressing products. Also, with previous loans he could buy a power generator and thus not suffer from power outages which are common in this area. Now, her goal is to own her hairdressing salon.

She enjoys working with Esperanza, especially for the bi-monthly repayment meetings. As she lives far from the nearest town (Samana), she is happy to save time and money each time she pays her installments (loan officers travel to the local communities for repayment meetings)

She also says that the responsibility that comes with loans encourage her to work harder.

Now that her business has expanded and her incomes have improved, she is thinking about taking loan with a bank because she can get a larger amount of credit.

If you want to keep supporting groups like “Trabajando para el future”, please consider making another loan to an entrepreneur of Esperanza: http://partners.kiva.org/app.php?page=businesses&partner_id=44&status=fundRaising&sortBy=New+to+Old

You can also check out and join Esperanza’s lending team : http://partners.kiva.org/team/team_esperanza_dr_and_hati
