Chan Saman

Chan Saman, age 57, lives in Prey Veng, Cambodia. Since 1998, she and her husband, Bun Sophat, age 56, have been vendors selling a variety of vegetables to earn a living and is able to earn up to US$2 of profit per day. Before this business, the couple used to be farmers, but they stopped because there was no irrigation system in their village and farming depended a lot on the weather. According to the couple, “I cannot collect more output unless the weather condition is good.” Due to difficulties such as bad weather, they have changed their work to selling vegetables instead. Together, the couple has two children and all of them have different work to support themselves. The oldest son is a taxi-driver and the daughter works as a housekeeper in Malaysia, making US$6 per day.

Mrs. Chan is seeking a loan of US$1,000 to build a new stand that is bigger to sell vegetables, as the old one was unreliable and too small. The money will also increase their inventory so they can meet their customers' demand for vegetables. (Mrs. Chan Saman is pictured with her husband.)
