Theresa is 55 years old, divorced, and has seven children. Currently, only one of the children is in school; the others have completed school. Theresa enjoys selling, and she has many years of experience serving customers. She has been selling maize and yam for 30 years to support her family. She treks to farming communities to buy her stock from the farmers. This saves her from buying from middlemen, who buy from the farmers and resell at higher price.

She plans to use the loan to buy maize and yams in bulk so she can meet the daily demands of her customers. She hopes to use part of her profit to support her children, who are ready to enter university this year.

Theresa is a member of a community group called Isaac Trust Group. In this group, members guarantee and support one another to repay their loans.

Theresa and her family are doing well. Theresa says that her youngest child is about to enter senior high school and the other six have completed school. That alone, is a positive change from the days before Sinapi Aba Trust (SAT) was there to offer Theresa a collateral free loan. Back then she had a hard time keeping all the children in school. She was able to send some of them, and the others just couldn’t go because Theresa didn’t have the money for the fees. In her husky voice Theresa told me that before she heard about SAT, she tried to take out a loan from many other banks but none would give her a loan because she had no collateral. She was happy to find SAT, and now Theresa is reaping the benefits of her sixth loan.

Now Theresa is making 100 cedis per month through her two businesses: trading in yams and cereals/grains, and a plastic chair and canopy business. This is a far cry from the 20 cedis a month she made before taking out loans. Because she has less school fees to pay now that almost all her children have completed school, Theresa has been able to put more money back into her entrepreneurial pursuits. The most recent loan was used to buy maize and yams from farmers to sell in town, and also to start her new chair and canopy business, which is situated on the main road in her town. Theresa is pictured here in front of her new chair and canopy store. With her profits, Theresa was able to pay for school fees and books for her youngest child, and buy some new clothes for all the children. Both businesses are doing well, and Theresa believes they will grow. She is saving money for reinvestment into the business, and plans to take another loan to supplement her savings. With the savings and the loan money, she will expand her chair and canopy business.

Theresa is a resourceful woman, with plenty of business sense. She has everything she needs to succeed thanks to SAT and generous Kiva lenders like you. Theresa tells me that her dream is to buy a piece of land. Step by step, loan by loan, Theresa comes that much closer to making her dream come true. Thank you for your most crucial part in helping to make that happen!
