Kheng Kim Heng, 27, raises pigs in her home with her husband, Meang Sin, in Siem Reap. They typically make US$10 per day and they have three young children to support. One of their children is a student in the local public school system, while the other two are still too young to attend school. Kheng Kim Heng has asked for a loan of US$1000 to purchase 10 piglets to breed for additional income. She would also like to use some of the money to purchase feed for the pigs. Raising pigs is a profitable business in Cambodia and the family would like to see this business continue to grow in the future. After this loan is repaid, they will consider expanding the pig's barn to accommodate their growing business.

Loan Update

Entrepreneur: Kheng Kim Heng
Location: Siem Reap Province, Cambodia

Kheng Kim Heng, 27, lives with her husband and three children in Siem Reap, Cambodia, the home of the famous Angkor Wat temple. Kheng raises pigs with her husband, and requested this loan to buy more piglets to raise.

I recently visited Kheng to ask about her family and business. Kheng said that she combined some of her savings with the loan to buy a battery charging machine for $1600. She said the family can get about $30 per day charging batteries, but much of the extra earnings must go towards paying for gasoline to power the generator. Kheng said that she can save an average of about $300 per month, a good amount relative to her neighbors.

Kheng said that her pigs are doing fine, but that sometimes she worries they will get sick. She and her husband thought that the battery charger would be a good investment, because many of the people nearby are not on the electrical grid, and use large car batteries to power the lights in their homes.

In the future, Kheng's husband wants to buy a car so he can take tourists around the temples, or drive them to the border as a taxi driver.

Journal Update

Entrepreneur: Kheng Kim Heng

I recently visited Kheng to learn more about the loan progress. I found out that their standard of living is doing better because of the loan impact. Lately, Kheng just open a new business selling grocery from her home. This new business is able to make an extra about US$2 every day. There are no problem with her new business. In the future, she plans to purchase a tourist car for her husband so that he can start transport tourists around Angkor Wat Temple.
