Business is picking up!

Entrepreneur: Veysal Guliyev
Location: Khirdalan Town, Azerbaijan

Since May, the loan Veysal received from Kiva has made a real difference in his life.

On a visit to his home in the Internally Displaced Persons settlement of Khirdalan, 20 minutes outside of the capital, Baku, (for those uprooted by Azerbaijan's conflict with neighboring Armenia), Veysal told us that he put the $625 to use in fixing up his taxi. First he bought new tires, then he applied a coat of paint, and then he fixed his engine's accumulator. When we visited, he was taking out the seats and cleaning them by hand.

Veysal said that before he made these improvements to his Soviet-style VAZ-2101, he earned between 20 and 50 Azeri Manat per day. Thanks to the renovations, he said he now earns 60 to 70 Manat per day, with customers showing a strong preference for a nicer automobile.

"I am very thankful to Kiva lenders. With this money I can improve my taxi business and I can provide for my family. Before, my family had a small income, but now we have a good income," he said.

Veysal said that with the added income he was able to afford fruits and vegetables for his 1-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter much more often.
