Antonia Martes belongs to the Hacia Adelante Bank of Hope and lives in a small community on the outskirts of San Pedro de Macorís. She lives in small home with her husband and five children, whose ages range from 6 to 16 years of age.

Antonia has a small 'fritura' business where she offers a variety of fried foods to her community. This most often includes fried plantain chips, fried pork, and other fried meats or starchy vegetables. She used her loan to buy a bigger variety of food to cook and to also buy her cooking oil in bulk to reduce costs.

Her dream is to have her own large food business where she owns her own location and building to sell it from. As she works towards that dream, she has created a goal to simply maintain a steady flow of business, to make sure that things are stable in her house, and to slowly grow her business.

Antonia and her story represent the Hacia Adelante Bank of Hope; she belongs to a group of 10 men and women who work hard to improve their lives through the help of their small loans. Each of these men and women has taken out a similar loan to that of Antonia's. On behalf of all of them, and our team here at Esperanza, thank you for your support!

Update on Antonia

Entrepreneur: Hacia Adelante Group
Location: San Pedro De Macorís, Dominican Republic

Antonia is very responsible; she has paid her loan on time every time. She recently upgraded to a slightly bigger loan of $15,000 Dominican pesos, approximately $417 US dollars to grow her business. Her business is thriving despite the down turning economy. With the loans she has expanded her inventory and is now selling both small amounts of grocery products as well as in bulk amounts to her community customers. In addition to grocery products Antonia is also selling clothes from her home. Antonia is proud of the store she has built because she finally feels that her finances are becoming stable. She has purchased medical insurance for her and her family through Esperanza and is now saving for emergencies. She saves approximately 148 Dominican pesos, the equivalent of $6.62 US dollars per month. This precaution is a safety net in case a tragedy occurs, a cushion from falling into extreme poverty as a result of an emergency. Thank you for supporting Antonia, your hand up instead of a hand out is helping change her life, the lives of her children and her community. Continue to give hope through Esperanza’s MFI. Thank you
