    A Grand Lady

    Entrepreneur: Mrs. Hong's Group
    Location: Bac Ninh, Viet Nam

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs Nguyen Thi Thu Hong, who is the leader for this group of Kiva borrowers. Mrs. Nguyen lives in a village in the Bac Ninh province, about 2 hours north of Hanoi in northern Vietnam.

Mrs. Nguyen is a grand woman of a more mature vintage. I would not dare ask a lady her age, but the Kiva web-site tells me she is 63 years old. Mrs. Nguyen sits down before me with tremendous presence and begins by announcing “I am retired”. She then proceeds to list all the little enterprises she is currently running, so it seems to be a fairly loose definition of retired! Mrs. Nguyen breeds pigs, chickens and ducks. She sells the actual livestock itself, not the eggs or any other produce they may generate. She used the Kiva loan to buy 4 piglets and some baby chickens. Mrs. Nguyen lives with her husband and together they tend to their animals. They have 5 grown-up children – the Kiva web-site incorrectly states that she has only 2 children.

Mrs. Nguyen tells me that this is the very first loan she has ever taken out. When I ask her what made her start at this later stage in her life, she informs me that previously she was living hand to mouth and not able to earn a profit. The loan however has helped her improve her cash-flow thereby providing a little left over for household expenses.

Mrs. Nguyen has a theatrical speaking style – you can’t help but listen to what she is saying, even if you can’t understand her! She has a beaming smile and laughs easily. She was a joy to interview, but she was quite adamant that she would not be photographed. It’s such a shame as I would have loved to show you this striking woman.
