Hello, we are part of the group called Lluvias de Gracias, which translates roughly to Showers of Gratitude. We are located in the neighborhood known as Jasmin, which is in the municipality of Pariaso. We know each other well and we've been working together for a long time.

Our activities include:

Tomasa Lovo is a single mother with a daughter who attends school. Tomasa works selling everyday grocery items and sweets in various shops and markets.

Maura Bermudez makes and sells snacks such as chicken tamales, enchiladas, etc, all of which she makes in her house. Fortunately, she generates enough income from her business to feed her family. Her husband died two years ago and now Maura is a single mother of two children. She has had to work very hard to take care of her family on her own.

Mirian Mondragon is a nurse and works in a public health clinic, but her salary is not enough to cover her household costs. After work, she makes snacks and sweets which she sells around the neighborhood. She has two children who attend high school, and help her sell her snacks in the afternoons.

All of the women work together and with some financial support, they will be able to grow their businesses and more importantly, take care of their families and improve their quality of life. For this reason they ask for your support to help them reach their goals. Thank you.

Kiva Journal Update for Tomasa Lovo Lira

Entrepreneur: Lluvias De Gracias Group
Location: Danli, Honduras

As a Kiva Fellow working with Kiva's Partner MFI, Prisma, I recently had the opportunity to meet Tomasa Lovo Lira to whom you recently made a loan.

Tomasa gave 5000 Lempira of her 10,000 Lempira loan to her daughter Evelyn so that she could start her own clothing business. Evelyn rents a small casita, or stand, in the center of Danli, Honduras. This central location is crucial to the success of her business. This 5000 Lempira ($264) is the money she used to buy all the stock for her store. Women's underwear and children's clothes sell best. Tomasa used the other 5000 Lempira to buy a new stove for her snack business. Tomasa sells traditional Honduran snack food including tacos, sweet breads and baleadas which are bean and butter filled tortillas. Here is a picture of Tomasa and her new stove.

Unlike her daughter who is just starting, Tomasa has been running this business for 25 years and has had a several loans from different microfinance organizations in Honduras. She is very happy to be with Prisma now because of their low interest rates and personalized attention. She is quick to mention though that her husband who disappeared years ago never liked her having loans. She is more content now that he is gone! As soon as he left, all her children started doing better in school. Now two are in University in Danli, about 40 minutes from home. While running her clothing business Evelyn is also taking distance courses and hopes to graduate this year. In addition to her three children Tomasa cares for her niece since she was 3 months old and thinks of her like a daughter. She is starting 4th grade soon and hopes to get good marks!

It was a pleasure talking with Tomasa and learning a little more about how she used her Kiva loan.
