Journal update for Phov Phoin

Entrepreneur: Phov Phoin
Location: Sa Ang, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Dear Kiva lender,

I recently had the opportunity to visit Phov Phoin to see how her business and family were doing. The area we visited that day was near the city of S’Ang, which is southeast of Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. It usually takes about 45 minutes to travel by car to CREDIT-MFI’s S’Ang branch from Phnom Penh when there is no traffic. That day it took about 45 minutes, and then another 45 minutes to reach the borrower in the village. I am delighted to bring you the following journal from Cambodia.

Mrs. Phov Phoin lives with her husband, their two children, and her little brother in a village near S’Ang. Her children are ages 4 and 7, and the older attends primary school which costs about $0.12 per day. Her little brother is 10 years old. They are famers and raise livestock to sell. They raise pigs and chickens. Mrs. Phov Phoin decided to take out a loan of $600 to purchase more chickens to breed and to purchase a motor-bike for transportation.

Mrs. Phov Phoin was born in Takeo province which is south of Phnom Phen. She moved to S’Ang about 15 year ago. Each day, she and her husband wake up at 6am, and are at Dak Kamau market by 7am. Currently, their main form of income is selling chickens, which they sell for $0.25 per kilogram. They can sell about 100 per year. With the loan, Phov Phoin purchased fertilizer for her fields, and gas for farming. The gas was used to pump water into and out of the fields.

Their household expenses are about $2.50 per day which include food and education for their daughter. They have their own well and use a battery for electricity. This helps cut down on monthly expenses. In the future, Phov Phoin would like to take out another loan. With the loan, she would purchase more chickens and repair her house. This rainy season has been longer than normal, and her walls are leaking. In the future, she hopes to expand her chicken business to sell 200 chickens per year, and expand her rice growing.

Mrs. Phov Phoin would like to thank you so much for helping support her and her family through your loan. She wishes the Kiva lenders good health. CREDIT-MFI appreciates your financial and social investment. CREDIT looks forward to partnering with you again in the future enabling them to continually provide quality financial services to Cambodia’s small business entrepreneurs.

I have attached a photo to this journal. The picture is of Mrs. Phov Phoin outside of her home.

Regards,
