Ms. Vuong Thi Dat's Story

Entrepreneur: Thi Dat Vuong's Group
Location: Dong Anh- Ha Noi, Viet Nam

Ms. Vuong Thi Dat, the group leader for this group, was the last borrower that my translator and I visited on the day I interviewed her. We had driven over many dirt roads on our motorbike and thus the bike was quite dirty. As we pulled up to Ms. Vuong’s business, Ms. Vuong herself thought we were another customer because she saw how dirty our motorbike was. It turns out Ms. Vuong, along with her husband, run a motorbike repair and cleaning shop!

Ms. Vuong and her husband have had their repair shop for 20 years and work together everyday. She primarily cleans the motorbikes and does small repairs while he does the major repairs such as welding (he learned how to repair motorbikes at a college equivalent to a vocational school in the US). She used her Kiva loan to help pay for new machines and tools for their repair shop (which also, after the front room, is their house!).

Currently their joint income is roughly 5,000,000 VND per month which is roughly $280. Before their Kiva loans, however, their combined monthly income was around only 4,000,000 VND. According to Ms. Vuong, they use their additional income to re-invest back into their business including buying new tools as well as repairs on the shop itself and their house. Furthermore, the prospects for their business look good because they are located on a main road and the closest competition is kilometers up the road. Thus their future looks bright!
