This committee is made up of 17 working women from the Costa Alegre de Cabañas neighborhood in the city of Caacupé. Most of the women make and sell chipas [traditional Paraguayan cheese bread]. The committee is currently in the fifth cycle of the Mujeres Emprendedoras [Women Entrepreneurs] program, which provides average loans of about $125 to each of its members.

The committee was established with the first meetings in Maria Cirina Samaniego’s house. Maria took charge of bringing the women together for meetings to appoint members of the group. One of the characteristics of this group is its on-time installment payments and its savings. The committee’s current goal is to meet with other women in the neighborhood to clean the sidewalks and streets, as well as plant trees on the block, all with their children’s care and wellbeing in mind.

Maria is very happy and proud to be an integral part of a group of women with honest goals such as helping to improve the quality of life in their community by doing community work. For example, they have organized athletic activities, musical contests and a San Juan party, with the objective of raising funds to increase their savings. In so doing, the group has planned for any unexpected event that might occur and thus provided the greatest assurance that late payments will not occur.
