A Tonne of Rice a Day!

    Entrepreneur: Van Tai Nguyen's Group
    Location: Bac Ninh, Viet Nam

    Hello Kiva Lenders,

I know you have only recently lent money to Nguyen Van Tai’s group, but I met them this week while they were receiving their loan and I thought you would not mind an early update.

Mr. Nguyen is the group leader for this group and lives in a village in the Bac Ninh province, about 2½ hours north of Hanoi. This is the first time Mr. Nguyen has taken out a loan with SEDA and he is using the loan to support his rice processing business. Mr. Nguyen has had this business for 15 years and his wife works with him.

Mr. Nguyen buys rice from local rice farmers, separates the rice from the husk and then sells the rice to individuals and food wholesalers. He told me that people often phone him, place their orders and then come to his home to pick up their order. Mr. Nguyen deals in relatively large quantities and he will use this loan to buy more rice and expand his output further, averaging 1000kgs of rice a day!

Mr. Nguyen is quite a character and was delighted by the whole interview process! Both the SEDA credit officer and my translator were giggling as he responded to my questions. Unfortunately the humour was lost in translation, but I can tell you that he has a lovely voice worthy of a radio announcer, a booming laugh and a mischievous smile.
