Zunilda Baret F. de Jhon has a wonderful heart and ambitions for the growth of her business. She has used her loans to start a hair salon that has been functioning for about three years now with the help of loans. When asked about her business, she kindly smiles and offers to give me a haircut in the near future. Ms. Baret F. de Jhon has used her loans for purchasing materials for daily operation such as mirrors, scissors, clippers, chairs, and hair accessories. She is married with six children, three of whom live at home with her. She enjoys spending her free time with her grandson and visiting with people in her neighborhood. When asked about her favorite food, she laughs and says that she’s Dominican so she must like “la bandera”, which is a traditional dish consisting of rice, beans, and meat. Also, when she’s not working in her shop, she dedicates her time to her church and the upholding of her home. Ms. Baret F. de Jhon would like to see her business grow in the future to help provide for her and her family.

Ms. Baret F. de Jhon is one of a group of 5 persons, 'Grupo 1', that is part of a micro-bank called Miramar Femenina which consists of 35 members (other members of Miramar Femenina are seen in the photo). Her story is just one of those of a list of men and women who are improving their quality of life through the help of the micro-credit loans of Esperanza. Together, this group has united with a common vision of a better life, with faith and hope in their hearts and an unbreakable spirit. The concept of group lending is to have loans repaid in a group to reduce the risk of any one person defaulting, as others pick up where a person may lag so as to receive the next loan. Each of the associates in this bank has a similar business whether it is a barbershop or a restaurant. Thank you for your support and awareness of this issue. It is your concern and efforts that are able to bring a difference to the lives of these wonderful people.

An update on Zunilda Baret and Miramar Femenina

Entrepreneur: Zunilda Baret F. De Jhon's Group
Location: Samana, Dominican Republic

Hello Kiva lender!

My name is Nate Sooter, and I am working this summer with Esperanza International in the Dominican Republic, which dispersed the loan to Zunilda Baret which you funded nearly a year ago. I apologize for the great delay in getting news to you about Zunilda’s life, and the difference your loan made in her life. However, I just had the opportunity to personally speak with her and I wanted to pass along to you some notes about how she is doing, and the difference your loan made in her life.

Zunilda, who lives in a neighborhood just outside the Dominican city of Samaná, owns a barbershop. She is pleased to pass along to you that she has successfully paid back her loan. She was able to use it for products for goods in her barbershop such as scissors and mirrors. She currently lives with one of her daughters and four grandchildren, and many of the profits she has earned have gone to supporting her family. Her daughter, who is currently 34 years old, is deaf and mute, and Zunilda has done an amazing job caring for her in an environment where being deaf and mute is difficult.

Currently, Zunilda does not have a loan with Esperanza. After seven loan cycles and nearly four years with Esperanza, she has decided to take somewhat of a break from her work in the barbershop. She has been working with one employee, who has recently decided to leave Zunilda’s barbershop and start his own. Along with a desire to take a break and the income of her husband, who works in Washington, DC, Zunilda has decided to allow herself a rest.

Zunilda is still extremely active in the repayment meetings of those who still have loans. Even without a loan, she still wants to support the microfinance process in her area. She was once the president, and still has glowing words for the impact that Esperanza, Kiva and microfinance has had in her neighborhood of Villa Clara. The extra earnings have allowed Zunilda to feed her family and build a kitchen within her home.

Your loan has made a direct impact on Zunilda’s life, and the others in her lending group. She wants to thank each and every one of you individually for your Kiva loan. It has made a great impact for Zunilda and the others in Miramar Femenina!
