The Sine Safou Group consists of women from Palmarin Ngallou (Senegal), who are busy processing local soap after having undergone training and gained experience in this field. Given the high cost of local soap, we are requesting a loan to buy the soap ingredients (myrrh oil, caustic soda, shea butter, scents, dyes etc) as well as equipment (buckets, valves, molds, mixers), in order to process the soap properly and be able to sell it to people and thus combat dermatological diseases.
Translated from French by Alison Dent, Kiva Volunteer.

Seynabou Faye

Seynabou Faye is the president of Sine Safou, and she is also the secretary of the Palmarin “ecovillage”. Seynabou is a shrewd businesswomen who sells her handmade soaps and juices to tourists in the nearby hotels. Her soaps use peanut in them, and she has shea butter and palm oil varieties. Like her juices, the soaps are packaged with her personal label, so as to appeal to tourists. A hotel nearby has started selling her products in its small ‘fair trade’ boutique, and the hotel also uses her soaps for its rooms. She makes many varieties of traditional juices, such as bissap, tamarin, and ginger. However, her juices are concentrated syrups that are not as popular in the village as they are among tourists. Sine Safou has had trouble with the last repayment of their loan, due to the off-season for tourism. However, they expect their business to pick up soon, and are looking into expanding their activities to cover the non-tourist months.
