We were able to visit Ilva del Carmen at her store to find out how she was doing with her Kiva loan.

As you may remember, she runs a small convenience store out of her home in the neighborhood of Laureles Sur, in Managua, Nicaragua where she sells an assortment of food and household products. You helped fund a loan she had asked for to put in a new wall to strengthen her home (and business).

When we stopped in to visit Ilva del Carmen there were children out front dirtying their school uniforms with a game of soccer in an area where the dusty dirt road becomes a much bigger dirt “field”. But despite what looked like a carefree block is actually known as a dangerous neighborhood for those who come in from other areas, and the loan officer pulled his motorbike into her yard in hopes that any passersby would assume we were part of Ilva del Carmen’s family stopping by.

Though the plan was to improve the house, Ilva ended up using the money from the loan to invest in a small farm that they own in a more rural area of Nicaragua. They have a few animals there, and this money allowed them to purchase and plant an area to grow food to support these animals. Though she still wants to improve her house in Managua, the family felt this farm investment was more urgent, and still left a little funding to invest in her store here.

She said she is grateful for the support she got from Kiva lenders, and hopes that another small loan in the future can help them move forward in what she says are difficult financial times.
