Sajida Ghulam Murtaza's Group

Married for nine years, Sajida baji is the second wife of Ghulam Murtaza. (Baji is the Urdu term of respect for "elder sister".) She owns a two-room brick house and has two children. Ghulam Murtaza also has five children from his first wife. But Sajida baji takes care of all seven children, and they are all getting educations. For example, her eldest daughter is in nursing school and the next elder daughter is in 10th standard. Ghulam Murtaza first sold garments on a bicycle. Sajida baji successfully completed her two loans from Asasah (a microfinance institute of Pakistan), and from those loans her husband has been able to buy and run his own garment shop. Now his wife is applying for a loan to expand the same business.

She is joined in her loan group by four members. Shahnaz baji wants a loan to buy an auto-rickshaw. Sajida baji would like to expand her food business. Bashiran baji wants to buy and resell wood. Mumtaz baji's aim is to buy a cart for fruit selling.

This is a group loan. The loan funds will be distributed among the group members, each of whom will invest in her own business. The members mutually guarantee one another's loans. If one member does not repay, the other members are responsible.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee.
