Loan Update

Entrepreneur: Hang Vouch Eng
Location: Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Heng Vouch Eng lives with her five chiIdren in Sa Ang, Cambodia. I recently went to visit Heng with a credit officer, but nobody was home. I asked the credit officer, and learned that Heng is currently 2 months late on her repayments. He said that she recently changed jobs because she was having difficulty making money at her old job of selling cakes in the market. Heng decided to work at a factory instead, but cannot earn enough money to repay her loans.

Heng also holds loans from two other banks. This practice is generally not allowed by MFIs, but it is difficult to keep track of clients without a centralized credit bureau. The credit officer said he learned about her other loans by talking to her neighbors, and by bumping in to a credit officer from another institution when he came to ask Heng for a repayment. The credit officer, Hean Sysovutha, said that it seems as though Heng is trying hard to avoid him because she does not want to make repayments.

If I am able to visit Heng at her home in the future, I will send another update.
