Júlio was born in Namaacha, on the border with Swaziland. He studied through ninth grade, when conditions did not permit him to continue. He is single and the father of seven children: the oldest are 16-year-old twins, the second is 12, the third 9, the fourth 7, the fifth 5, and the youngest only 1 year old. Júlio is responsible for even more, sending food and money to his parents monthly, as he lives with their first two children.

Júlio began working in 1986 as a driver at the Hotel Pequenos Libombo, holding that position for eight years. The salary was low and did not manage to cover the household expenses. He therefore decided to quit working for his employer and to start his own business of selling fish in the informal market. He was able to buy a car which has helped him greatly, even today. Júlio moved out of his parents' house when he was able to do so. Now he has his own business at his house and an employee who makes 1500 meticals (mt) per month working from 7:00am to 3:00pm. Júlio earns 8400mt per month, making 420mt per sack and using up 20 sacks per month. He is not able to save anything because there are many expenses.

This is Júlio's second loan with Hluvuku [MFI Field Partner] and his first with Kiva. The first was for 10,000mt and was used to buy construction material to finish his work. He succeeded in paying off the loan before it was due. Júlio then returned and requested this loan of 20,000mt which he will use to buy brick-building material. Júlio believes that this loan will improve his business because it will allow him to meet the needs of his clients. For Júlio, his big dream is to increase his business and to send his children through school.

Update on Julio Malaulane Albino's Kiva Loan!

Entrepreneur: Julio Malaulane Albino
Location: Namaacha, Mozambique

Today I met with Julio Malaulane Albino to discuss his Kiva Loan. With his loan he was able to make necessary investments in his concrete block business. Julio said that over the past year the cost of concrete, water and sand have all increased . This has brought his profit margins down. His Kiva loan increased his purchasing power to a point where the cost of materials, when bought in large quantities, came down.

Julio also expressed need to buy a truck. Currently he has a small pick up truck that he uses to make pickups and deliveries locally, but he needs a bigger truck for going to Boane and Maputo to pick up materials. Currently it costs him MT 7,000 each time he has to rent a truck. In the future he would also like to buy a machine that makes blocks rather than just depending solely on manual labor.

Thanks for being a part of Julio's project!
