Ms. Dolores Chávez Alvarado is a member of the “Santa Isabel” microfinance institution, located in the district of Picota, in the province of Picota, San Martín department. She prepares and sells meals for a living in the district’s market, courteously serving her patrons—mostly all residents of the area.

The need to improve her financial situation impelled her to start her own business, having at that time only a small kitchen, a table, and a few utensils. She later improved her business via loans from the microfinance institution and the profits from her daily sales.

With the loan of 1,500.00 Peruvian soles, which will be repaid in 6 months, she will purchase ingredients such as: rice, sacks of sugar, cooking oil, and condiments in bulk. She will buy meats (chicken, beef, pork, fish) and assorted vegetables daily. She will buy kitchenware such as pots, plates, bowls, spoons, forks, and plastic table covers so that she can meet her patrons’ needs.

She is 67 years of age and has 3 independent children. She would like to have a well-established business so that she can have a calm old age. She counts on the affection and respect of her patrons.

Entrepreneur: Dolores Chávez Alvarado
Location: Picota - San Martín, Peru

Entrepreneur : Dolores Chávez Alvarado

Communal Bank : Santa Isabel

Location : Picota, Picota, San Martín - Perú

Loan amount : S/. 1,500

Dolores is an older woman who sells prepared food in a stand at the Picota market. With a portion of the loan she received, she invested in buying the raw materials that she needs to cook the dishes she serves to her customers every day such as rice, beans, sugar, chicken, etc. The other part she saved in case of an emergency since she lives alone and supports herself with the money she makes from her business. Lately sales have declined because of increased competition. However, Dolores hasn't lost her optimism and continues to work hard every day.

Dolores wants to keep her business going and obtain profits that allow her to support herself and later retire. She is thankful for the loans she received since these have allowed her to grow and maintain her business.
