Meas Veoun, 50, is a widow and lives with her children in Siem Reap province. Mrs. Meas has had a business selling a variety of fruits in a busy market since 1998 and earns around $10 each day. She also gets support from her son who is a fruits vendor in a different market who typically makes about $5 each day. She has four children, one of whom is married and lives away.

Mrs. Meas Veoun would like a loan to purchase more fruits in order to meet her customers' growing demand and to expand her business. She is pictured here with her son.

Loan Update

Entrepreneur: Meas Veoun
Location: Siem Reap Province, Cambodia

Meas Veoun, 50, is a widow who lives with three of her four children in Siem Reap, Cambodia, home of the famous Angkor Wat temple. Meas sells fruit, and requested this loan so she could have more capital to use when buying fruits.

I recently visited Meas to learn about her business and how she used her loan. Meas said that she uses the money to buy fruits for herself and her sister when she thinks it's a good time to buy. She has sales of around $50 to $75 per day during normal periods, but around the Cambodian New Year, fruit is in high demand, and she can sell about $400 of fruit a day.

In an average month, Meas saves about $2-300. She says that she keeps it to use for emergencies like unexpected illnesses.

Meas said that because her income is seasonal and often fluctuates, she sometimes has trouble dealing with expenses.

In the future, Meas wants to expand her business, and maybe sell cigarettes. She said that her stall is in a favorable position, and she'd like to try selling something other than fruit to differentiate her stand from the other fruit stands around her's.
