Loan Update

Entrepreneur: Kinh Socheat
Location: Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Kinh Socheat lives with her husband and four children in Sa Ang, Cambodia. Kinh’s husband purchases fish from fishermen, and Kinh sells the fish locally and to transporters who take the fish to markets in the capital city, which is about 30-40 minutes away by motorbike. Kinh asked for a loan so she could have more capital on hand to use when purchasing fish.

I recently visited Kinh and asked her about her business. Kinh said she used her loan to buy more fish. As a result of increased sales, Kinh earns about $12.50 in profit per day, compared to $7-$10 previously.

Kinh has been selling fish with her husband for about three years. She told me that her purchasing price for fish is about $1.60/kg, and her selling price is about $2/kg. After household expenses, which include electricity ($12.50/month), water ($5/month), and gas ($45/month), Kinh saves about $35 per week. She said that this is a general improvement over her previous situation.

When asked about the future, Kinh smiled and said she wants to sell a lot of fish, and then buy a big house.
