A Journal Update for Tabempa Group

Entrepreneur: Tabempa Group
Location: Magburaka, Tonkolili, Sierra Leone

Greetings are coming to your from Patrick Koroma, leader of the Tabempa Group. I learnt from Patrick yesterday as I was interviewing him for this journal that there is something interesting about the choice of their group name. He told me that he decided to name the group Tabempa, a Temne phrase meaning “Let us make.” What is to be made, I asked, “there are a lot in the world that have gone bad and these are the very things that we need to make” he replied.

Patrick and group members have successfully repaid their loan and each member of the group has made some gains out of it. For the group leader, Patrick, he combines the loan amount with the previous loans he had already repaid to buy a motor-bike, called Bajaj. Motorbikes are widely used in Sierra Leone particularly in the provinces as a means of transportation. Now, Mr. Bangura is running his motor-bike with peace and comfort as it does not breakdown like the second-hand motor bike he used to have.

Mr. Bangura told me that since he began selling palm-oil (the most popular cooking oil) he had never been able to get a motor-bike, but thanks to SMT/Kiva loans, he has now been able to realize his dream. The motorbike has helped him greatly, he told me. He is able to pay his children's school fees and solve most of his family affairs out of the profit he makes from his palm-oil business, while at the same time his motorbike is bringing him additional income which he saves for other developmental issues. His children he told me are doing well in school, something which he is very glad about as he is not wasting money in them.

Patrick sends a lot of thanks to you for what you have done for him. He is asking on you to keep on giving him the same help. “This help has done a lot for us” he told me. “Many children in our community are going to school today because of this loans” he concluded.

SMT too says THANK YOU for supporting our client. Please continue giving out your support to our clients. I tried posting a video of Patrick talking to you on YouTube but alas, the Internet connection lines are too poor that the video can not be uploaded.
