Luisa is nineteen years old, and she lives with her mother and three brothers and sisters in the Alto Limonal community of Baní. Luisa studies medicine in the public university in Santo Domingo, the capital, and she has to go outside her community twice a week to the university.

To contribute to her family’s revenue and save money for her studies, Luisa wants to start a small business selling costume jewelry. She explains that she gained a lot of experience in sales when she sold these goods for a company a few years ago. Luisa is very confident, and she says that she knows how to persuade people to buy her goods. She knows that the competition may be hard, but she’ll do her utmost to make her business successful.

Given this loan, this young and ambitious girl will be one step closer to reach her goals and lift herself out of poverty.

We recently paid a visit to Luisa’s business so as to get an update for Kiva lenders. Since the disbursement of the loan, the young entrepreneur shifted her plan and, instead of investing in jewelry, she bought women’s clothing to start her business. When we got to Luisa’s shop, there were a few of clothing left. The sales were greatly successful, and now she gets a good clientele. The entrepreneur is now looking forward to expand her shop and add men’s clothing to her inventory. She hopes she’ll be able to do so before long.

Luisa thanks all Kiva lenders who have contributed to make her dream come true. Now, it’s easier for the entrepreneur to support her medicine studies.
