Loan update from Nicaragua! Entrepreneur: Candida Rosa Velásquez Chavarría Location: Managua, Nicaragua On Tuesday we met with Candida Rosa to find out the news on her Kiva loan that was funded last June. She was extremely shy, and was actually only able to speak a few words besides her name before freezing up and looking at her feet, or looking around the room as if she might find some way to escape. Since we didn’t want her to feel uncomfortable, we did not stay long. However, we gathered from family members that she was taking a break from her business of selling tortillas, and had begun selling vegetables and fruits there on the front porch of her house. The loan officer from AFODENIC, who knows Candida and her low income neighborhood well, explained that there was a lot of competition in selling tortillas, and as often happens here, she was trying to adapt and try something new to make ends meet. The Kiva loan helped her to purchase these new foods to sell. The good news is that this new business is still thriving, with various fruits and vegetables that were on display when we stopped in, and a boy came by to purchase a small bag of fruit for his family even while we were there. Candida said we could record the short video below as the loan officer goes shopping among her new products.
