Update on Sootino Finau's Loan

Entrepreneur: Sootino Finau
Location: Vaiee, Samoa

Recently I had the pleasure of talking with Sootino Finau about her business and her loan. Sootino owns a plantation in her village of Vaiee along the southern coast of Upolu Island. On her plantation she grows taro, taamu, pumpkins, manioca and cabbage. With her loan from South Pacific Business Development (SPBD) Sootino bought fertilizer and pesticides to increase her crop yield. Every day Sootino sells some of her produce in a small stand along the road outside her house. From her sales she earns around 400 tala per week. With this profit, Sootino hopes to upgrade her small roadside stand to a proper shop where she would sell other food products in addition to her produce.

SPBD's philosophy of lending is based on a respect for each individual's innate human ingenuity, drive and self esteem. It is these qualities which make people credit worthy, not the collateral which traditional banks demand. To learn more about SPBD, click here.
