An update about Elisa Vasquez in the Dominican Republic

Entrepreneur: Fuente Para El Desarrollo Group
Location: Samana, Dominican Republic

Dear lender,

My name is Nate Sooter, and I am working this summer with Esperanza International here in the Dominican Republic. One of my responsibilities is to work with Kiva and give updates on borrowers who have received loans from Kiva in the past and have now finished their loan cycle. Just recently I was able to have a conversation with Elisa Vasquez, who you loaned money to a little over a year ago. I apologize for the delay in getting this update to you – it’s been over six months since she paid off her loan! I hope you enjoy this update, as I had a great time speaking with Elisa in her town of Las Galeras.

Elisa is happy to let you know that she did successfully pay back the Kiva loan you provided. She is currently selling cleaning goods, such as detergent and soap, along with perfume, facial creams and other beauty products. She sells all of this from her home, and has been doing so for the last three years.

Before coming to Esperanza, she sold Avon beauty products, but found this business too slow to be sustainable in her area. She has found selling cleaning goods, along with a few select beauty goods, to be easier. Much of this she sells through a catalog, from where she orders the goods and then distributes them to others. Over time, she has found making a profit selling out of a catalog much more rewarding and profitable than her Avon product selling in the past.

Today, Elisa lives with her husband and lone daughter. Her husband, who works in the agriculture industry, supports her business. Elisa has been able to use the profits to help pay for medical costs for her daughter, and in-home goods such as a television and new cups and silverware.

Elisa is very thankful for the presence of Esperanza and Kiva in her area, and wanted to say thank you for giving her the opportunity to start this business. She never would have had the opportunity to create this business without your help!

I would like to encourage you to continue giving loans on Kiva- through my conversations with different women here in the Dominican, it is clear that your loans are making a great difference in each individual’s life. You are giving them a chance to earn an income which previously was not possible.

Thank you
