Dominga is the mother of three children, all of whom are now in their twenties. She has a small business selling hair braids to her neighbors and wants to be able to expand it. She hopes to be able to provide for her family and better her current living situation through the profits she will earn with a larger business. She sees people around her with more amenities and luxuries, but she cannot afford them for her family. Currently, she lives in one of the poorest provinces in the Dominican Republic. Though the loan may not seem like much, it has the potential to greatly help her and her family.

Kiva Business Update

Entrepreneur: Bank Of Emprendedoras Group
Location: El Seybo, Dominican Republic

Dominga used her Kiva loan to purchase hair supplies and make-up that she sells from her house located in “Batey 35.” A batey is a rural community of barrack style housing provided by sugar cane growers. These communities have very limited resources and are (often) completely surrounded by sugar cane fields. Despite being located in a rural community with limited resources Dominga is doing exceptionally well.

She must travel an hour and a half every two weeks to another city called “La Romana” to buy her products in bulk, but enjoys her job. Dominga hopes that in the future she can keep expanding her business, and hopes to add more beauty merchandise to her store.
