Elbrus Khalilov is a 50-year-old man who sells dairy products such as milk and yogurt in the southern region of the Bilasuvar Internally Displaced People Settlement. He has more than 20 years of experience in this field. His main financial source is selling dairy products to local people and to the local milk factory. His current income is just enough to cover his family's basic needs. As well, much of the dairy products Elbrus keeps in the family, which uses the milk and yogurt as their main everyday meal. He decided to purchase two calves for $400 USD each and raise them as milk cows. The raising period of a middle-size calf takes approximately two to three months.

Livestock fund children’s education

Entrepreneur: Elbrus Khalilov
Location: Bilasuvar, Azerbaijan

Elbrus Khalilov wasn’t home when we stopped but, but his wife, Elza, told us that business is good since he received his $800 Kiva loan.

He bought one calf and one milk cow with the money, and the family is thankful that since then the cow had a baby. Now he has six cows in total — not to mention the dozens of chicken and turkeys running all over his property.

Elbrus and Elza, parents to three, lives in the Bilasuvar Internally Displaced People Settlement in Azerbaijan — for those driven from their homes in the Armenian territorial conflict — and conditions can be hard. But thanks to their livestock holdings, they can provide for their children. They plans to sell the calves in the next 3 months, and may also slaughter one for the wedding of their oldest son.

All of his kids are getting educations, Elza said with pride. Dairy sales allow them to pay for those educations.

“What can I say more than thank you!” was her message, in Azeri, to the family’s Kiva lenders.
