Forty-three-year-old Namaganda Mastula, treasurer of Kewerimidde women’s group, is a businesswoman who owns a retail shop in Katosi. Katosi is a port city, with the main activity being fishing. In Mastula’s shop, she sells fishing materials such as floaters, oars, jerry cans, fishing nets, and hooks. She has had her shop for six years. Her dream is for her shop to grow and become more lucrative with more fishing supplies of different types. She would like a loan to buy more floaters, fishing nets, hooks, jerry cans and oars. She is a widow with seven children to care for, of which four are her own. Mastula also has a tailoring business just outside her shop, through which she buys material for school uniforms and women’s traditional and casual wear, all for sewing. For the uniforms, she gets contracts from schools, and this only booms at the beginning of each school term. She does all this for the sake of her children’s future.

Namaganda Mastula has been able to cater for her fatherless children by making sure that her retail shop stands the test of time. She is grateful that by the time her husband died, the shop that sells fishing nets and other fishing materials was on the brim of closing but when she was introduced to her Kewerimidde group, life has changed and the shop has developed more. With the extra profits, she was able to buy a sewing machine from which she has also attracted more customers to both businesses. She has no hope of stopping to borrow since the loans now stand in as a companion in time of need; and now her children do not even lack like the case was 4 years back.
