An Update on Christina Muyang

Entrepreneur: Muyang Christina
Location: Mile 17, Mbengwi, Nw Province, Cameroon

Christina purchased two piglets at 12,000 CFA ($24 USD) each five months ago. She purchases feed for her pigs for 5,500 CFA ($11 USD) per bag; one bag can last her for two weeks. She plans to sell one of the piglets after one year has passed and keep the other pig to 'cross' (breed) to continue her pig business.

On Christina's farm, she grows cassava, cocoyams, and corn. She sells her vegetables in the Mbengwi market, about an hour's bumpy drive on a dirt road outside of Bamenda. She goes to the market once or twice per week and can make 1,500 per pocket of cocoyams and sells around 3 pockets a week. When she makes garri from cassava, a staple carbohydrate side dish in Cameroon she can make around 12,000 to 13,000 CFA ($24 to $26 USD). As garri takes about four days to make (it must be ground, soaked, drained and fried), she only makes it once or twice a month.

Christina has eight children and has raised them alone since her husband died six years ago. Two of her children still live with her now in her home; one of them is in school and the other is unemployed. Since joining GHAPE she says "I get change, when my man be die, my relatives drove me from my house. I done try hard. I buy my small place and built two rooms for me. I'm seeing real progress now. I really do fine. May god help them [those that contributed to her last loan] continue for the supply. I don't know what I would do if without that loan."
