Muwanga Joyce, 50, is the chairperson of the Kyosiga Women’s group in Kayunga. She is both a farmer and a business woman, selling ladies' clothes (mostly underclothes) to women in their offices, hospitals, schools and homes as a side business since 1990. Joyce buys her inventory from Kampala, mostly on Thursdays and Mondays every week.

As a farmer, Joyce grows beans, potatoes, and cassava and sells her crops to tenders, who supply this food to schools and usually pay her each week. At times when the season is not favorable for her, Joyce buys crops from fellow farmers and then supplies them to her customers. She has enough land for this farming and employs laborers to quicken the work. She is married with three grown children and she cares for 8 grandchildren at home.

Joyce needs a loan to buy dried beans for sale. She will share the loan with the 14 other members of her group.

Journal Entrepreneur: Kyosiga Women's Group Location: Kayunga, Uganda Muwanga Joyce’s decision to start up a clothes selling business was to make provisions for a business that would bring in a daily income unlike the farming business where the produce is seasonal and usually take some time to mature in addition to looking for a market for the produce. So the profits from the sale of clothes helps to repay back her loan as she caters for her family needs as well. She is also grateful that her farm is able to go on with the continuous support from using the loans to pay her workers as well as buying fertilizers for high quality yields.
