Vorng Phout is 45 years of age and sells Khmer style noodles, in the form of a traditional soup, from her roadside stall. She is relatively new to the business, having only started it two years ago and is earning $2 USD per day. Her husband is a construction worker. Unfortunately, his work is transient, taking him from village to village throughout the province, and often keeping him away from his family.
They have a total of eight children. Five of these children are still in school, an impressive feat for a large, poor family like their own. Two of the children are old enough to work and add an additional $4 USD per day to the family income. One of their sons wants to start working part-time as a motor-taxi driver to do his part to help. Vorng Phout would like to be able to better provide for her family by buying a motorbike for him to use.
