Mr. Ouyaogouda and his wife are living in the Kara region, Northern Togo. They have six children and all of them are going to school. Both of them have been selling hoes for many years. When they sell them, they use the benefits to pay for food and the school fees for their children. Both of them share the benefits as they all travel together to sell them in different markets located in the various villages, but the ownership of the business is the husband’s.

Even though farm products have become very costly even for farmers themselves, it turns out that there are more and more people interested in farming. Unfortunately they don’t have hoes to buy and use to plough and grow vegetables, millet and maize. That’s why Yao is requesting the loan to buy more hoes and sell them to many farmers in his area. He is requesting a loan of one thousand dollars ($1000) that he will use to buy more hoes, sell as many as he can to the farmers, and make more money and pay back his loan within 18 months.

Update on Kiva's Partnership with HELP Africa

Entrepreneur: Yao Ouyaogouda
Location: Kara, Togo

As you may already know, HELP Africa has been facing serious organizational challenges that have limited its ability to post and manage loans on Kiva. In January, a mutual agreement was reached to pause their fundraising activities on our website, though the institution was expected to continue collecting and sending borrower repayments on existing loans. The difficulties, however, proved to be more significant than initially believed, and HELP Africa has had to close its doors and cease operations in Togo. The institution recently constituted a new Board of Directors that is working on developing a new international strategy for the group, but at this point, it is unclear what the outcome for Togo will be.

Since HELP Africa has been delinquent on payments for more than six months, all of their active loans will be defaulted, per Kiva’s default policy. Kiva will continue to work on collecting loan repayments, and we will keep you posted on any new developments. Any amounts eventually recovered by Kiva will be applied to Help Africa Lenders proportionally.

For status updates and more information, please refer to HELP Africa’s partner page at http://www.kiva.org/about/aboutPartner?id=45.
