In the city of El Alto, in the middle of the Andes, one finds the 17 de Agosto ("August 17") association, a group of 14 active members who have worked with Pro-Mujer for more than two years, showing themselves to be very organized and responsible in their joint activities.

Almost all of them, with their families, between costs for housing and other expenses, spend at least 400 Bs. per month, an amount that is very difficult for them to scrape together. Furthermore, they have to pay interest on loans that they received from Pro-Mujer to set up their businesses.

The businesses are diverse: making and selling lunches, for example, or making and selling blankets and "polleras" (a kind of skirt, traditionally worn in La Paz), but the sale of sports clothes is the main business. They generally take their products to La Paz's "Mananeras" market, so called because sales are only allowed until 10 in the morning ("manana"). They need more capital to buy raw materials so that they can expand their production and increase their revenues which, in turn, will provide them with greater economic stability.
