Goma Khatri is married and has two children -- a daughter who is in the eighth grade and a son in the seventh. Her husband, Mr. Manohari, works at a factory in a nearby industrial area.

Goma Khatri owns one cow and and makes a living selling milk in her area. In Nepal pure, fresh cow’s milk is highly valued as a beverage and for its contribution to health. She carries her milk around with her in containers and sells it door to door every morning and every evening.

Goma Khatri lives in a growing neighborhood in which demand for milk is constantly increasing. To help meet this demand, she would like to buy another cow to increase her production. She plans to purchase a jersey cow, which produces more milk than most cows, and has applied for a $300 loan to fund the purchase.

Update

Entrepreneur: Goma Khatri

Livestock is always a risky investment.

With her Kiva loan, Ms. Khatri was able to purchase a young jersey cow which she intended to raise for milk production; however, soon after the purchase, the cow died.

At Rs. 15,000 (about USD $250), the cow was a huge investment for Ms. Khatri and it's loss a considerable setback. However, Ms. Khatri has arranged to purchase another cow and is hopeful that the loss can be counterbalanced by the crops she has been able to produce in her fields.

While the loss has been difficult for Ms. Khatri, she has been able to continue sending both of her children to school and both plan to attend college after passing their final secondary school exams.
