She thinks it will take her five years to do this if she continues to sell well and get support from her loans.

Martha Sabina Baca Maqui is 27 years old and married. She has one son who is ten years old. Her family lives together in the La Rinconada neighborhood of Trujillo in the La Libertad region of Perú. Marta is a member of the Estrella de Jesús (Star of Jesus) communal bank. She is pictured above at the group´s monthly meeting.

Martha was born in the Andes but moved to Trujillo with her sister 15 years ago to finish school. In the Andes her family did not have electricity or many amenities, but life is more comfortable here in La Rinconada.

For the past 8 years, Martha has made and sold herbal rememdies from her cart which she stations in front of the local hospital. Martha uses her Kiva loans to buy herbs in bulk – she buys 30 to 40 pounds of herbs at one time. With the herbs she concocts drinks and salves that cure inflammations, coughs, ensure potency, and others.

She likes the work because she can sell her wares in the morning and then go home to her son and to take care of her house in the afternoons. The only difficulty for her is that people always try to bargain her prices down – they want more for less, she says. Her husband also sells herbal remedies at a cart that he stations at the bus terminal. Together with her husband she would like to save enough money to buy her own home one day. She thinks it will take her five years to do this if she continues to sell well and get support from her loans.
