Margarito lives in the town of Ticuantepe outside the city of Managua. He has worked in agriculture for thirty years, and in that time has gained much experience and a love for the land. He began cultivating his land through his own efforts and has gradually gotten ahead in life.

Margarito is 48 years old. He is married and has three children, only one of whom is still under his care. Margarito’s wife is a vendor and helps support the family.

Margarito would like to use this loan to buy supplies for the harvest and for improving production, and thus increase the quality of his yield along with his earnings at the time of sale.

Checking in with Margarito

Entrepreneur: Margarito Antonio Calero
Location: Managua, Nicaragua

Last year, you helped fund a loan to Margarito Antonio Calero, who requested credit to purchase agricultural supplies. Margarito has repaid this loan in full and you should receive your repayment soon. This journal update was written for his most recent loan (http://www.kiva.org/app.php?page=businesses&action=about&id=115273), but we thought you might be interested to read it too, as you supported Margarito in the past. Yesterday we stopped by Margarito’s home, hoping to chat with him about how his loan and his crops have fared.

As it was early afternoon, Margarito was out in the fields working on his crops, so unfortunately we did not get to talk with him. Instead, one of his wife’s daughters, Ana, was able to tell us a bit about how things have been going.

With his loan, Margarito was able to cover the costs of fertilizers, pesticides, and refrescantes to keep the crops clean. Right now he is growing pineapple, chile peppers, and sweet peppers. His tomato-growing season ended about a month ago. Margarito learned to cultivate crops from his father and from some trainings.

Margarito works in the fields about seven hours a day, especially because it is currently the work-intensive pineapple season. He has three workers who help him. Margarito sells his produce at a market in Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua. On Thursdays and Sundays he is there selling all day. Ana told us that sales are good at the moment.

Ana has six sisters and two brothers; two of these are Margarito’s children. His fields are located about three kilometers from his home, and in the long run, Margarito would like to be able to grow more pineapple.

Check out the picture below to see where Margarito lives! Thank you for reading this journal update.
