loan increased profitability

Entrepreneur: Mohammad Nadar Gul Agha
Location: Kabul, Afghanistan

Mr. Nader has a bread bakery in west of Kabul. He gets up at 4am to work until 10pm everyday without a break. He has 9 part-time workers who go to school half day. The bakery produces daily around 2,000 loafs of Afghan breads. He is hardworking and satisfied with his business.

Before receiving a Kiva loan of 50,000 Afghani ($1,000), Nader had to purchase flour and fuel woods (the two main items) on credit from the suppliers. This way of doing the business was quite bothersome for him with little profit as the creditors would stop by his shop every weekend and sometimes push him pay. Also purchase on credit would be way expensive than in cash. He was so glad he got the loan and this has changed the way he does the business. He has made his past 3 repayments fully and on time.

Now Mr. Nader purchases flour and fuel woods with cash money at a very reasonable prices. His daily net profit is AFS 1,000 ($20), compared to previously less than 500 Afghanis a day. The 50,000 loan money is not the whole capital he needed for the bakery--he made a personal investment of 200,000 Afghani building the bakery and paying advanced monthly rents to the land lord--but the loan money has made his life easy and has increased profitability.

Nader is 34 and has 4 small children. His wife works at home taking care of the thriving children. He said his job was quite overwhelming his life. Usually he does not get to see her wife and children at home as when he leaves home they are asleep and when he comes back from work, kids are asleep and wife sleepy, he smiled! But Nader was happy he had bakery skills and could afford the high costs of living in Kabul.
